Here, I don’t mean to say that we should boycott westernization, but what about our own culture? What about our moral values? Who will preserve them? Surely ,it is our responsibility and we ought to shelter our culture. But, isn’t westernization a need today?? This is surely a dilemma-tic question.
On one hand , westernization has played a key role in eradicating the evils like ‘female foeticide’ ,’sati’, ‘child marriage’ , ‘untouchability’ and many other orthodox temperaments of our society.
While on the other hand, it has played a vital role in creating a malaise in the new generation. It has not only changed the dressing style and diet pattern, but has also brought the concepts of ‘suicide’, ‘drug consumption’ and ‘alcoholism’! It has made people self-centered, selfish and hostile. Affluent and flawed lifestyle can be considered as the by-products of westernization.
With the accelerating growth of technology, we’ve progressed on global scale. But our temperament has also gone global. Just like a bird freed from the cage, we want to fly faster and higher. And in that race, we’ve outraged our morals and values. We try our best to adapt the modern trends but somewhere we fail to execute this modernity.
We tend to reflect westernization by our clothing and fashion. But mentally, we still lack to think on the modern grounds. Even today, the evils like female foeticide and child marriage exist in our society. The female literacy ratio reflects that a girl child is still not accepted by many among us. Hence we can conclude that we are still a toddler in the field of getting modern.
Even we don’t realize that our behavior towards our own culture is hostile. We don’t want to understand that our culture is not just following rites, rituals and traditions. Instead ,it teaches us humanity. ’Give respect and get respect ‘ is the theme or I can say it is the aim of our culture. But we are implementing only its darker side!
The main problem with people today, is ‘narrow-mindedness’ and the fact is, it is a common element of both the cultures i.e. habitants, no matter whichever culture they follow, they showcase their narrow mindedness in someway or other. Thus, we can say that, culture has failed to teach people to think on a broader ground. Only lifestyle is affected by western culture not their mindset!
Today, social networking has taken the place of family get-together. People prefer to meet online instead of visiting each others’ homes. They’d go for online hangouts instead of family dinners. They’d like each others ‘ online status but will not bother asking their actual status. These all are nothing but the traces of vague westernization.
Actually, instead of following the footprints of other cultures, we must try to conserve our own. We can definitely extract the positive elements of western culture and ignore its adverse qualities. Finally, we can mould our culture by modifying it with all the flourishing aspects. We can vanish the evil shadows of narrow-mindedness and orthodox temperaments from our society and save the society and ourselves from wholesale degradation!
